“My brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”    I Corinthians 15:58

Ah, the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer…. vacations, relaxing, sleeping late, visiting, traveling, taking it easy. It’s what we do. We are pretty good at it to be sure. The kids are out of school and it seems that the pace of everything changes somehow, even for those who do not have school-aged kids. We don’t have to slow down for school zones. Pool parties and trips to the water parks are great ideas, and many of us spend time in the water. Adults take time off of work. Summer just puts all of us in a different kind of mindset/mood.

And the circle of time goes on. We move now to the hot, muggy summer and all the while we are thinking about the cooler fall. It’s a familiar train of thought. Enjoying each season of the year (though we really only have two-lol) is natural for us. But, in spite of the changes we experience in many ways during the summer, some things just keep moving on.

Yes, you know where I am going with this. Church is one thing that does not take the summer off. This summer our church will continue its work and ministry among ourselves and our community. We still need each other during the summer. Our community still needs us during the summer. My word to all of you is - Don’t forget or neglect your calling as part of the community of faith here at First Christian Church. We will still need you to be present, worshiping with us, serving with us, sharing fellowship with us. Summer may even be a good time to dig a little deeper into your faith as a family! As the apostle Paul says in his Corinthian letter, “Be steadfast.”

Come, follow Jesus with me,

Rev. Susan Lassalle

A Note From the Board…

Unified Church

Is it important for you that our church is unified? As a church that values diverse spiritual belief and freedom of worship how then do we openly support unity? One easy way is for each of us to be accepting of each other regardless of our background.  We must embrace our differences and understand that our own personal experience can’t be used to convert others to our side. We are all different. It is these differences that unify us in worship with this church that allows each of us to be accepted regardless of spiritual belief or personal difference. We are all here for Jesus and God, which is all that matters.

Do not over commit and under-perform. With such a small congregation we struggle to fill positions each year. We feel obligated to perform God’s will and this obligation tends to make us over commit with good intentions. However, this over commitment can do harm within a small congregation that relies on our members for spiritual leadership. The added responsibilities and our own personal life make us under-perform. This in turn adds added stress to an already stretched membership and eventually bleeds into our own interaction with other members during church time.

We continue to find a way to be unified, a way for us to work together more efficiently and not over commit and under-perform. Accept accepting each others' spiritual differences and background. Do not let personal opinion interfere with God’s work and plan. Together we can grow; together we can build a bigger, better, more committed congregation. Let’s use the remainder of this year to change in growth and personal development.
